Giving

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

- Matthew 6:21

Why we give.

God is generous and so he calls us to be as well.  What we do with what God has given us shows the world where our hearts are at and helps proclaim the gospel. We want to glorify God with every area of our lives, and that includes what we do with our finances.

Isn't tithing an OT concept?

Tithing is an OT concept. The people of Israel were told to give 10% of their income to the Levitical Priesthood so that the priests could focus on ministry and work for the people in the temple. Though this is an OT concept, it is assumed that giving will continue in the New Covenant. A number, such as 10%, is not prescribed by Jesus or by the Apostles so the question we have to ask is this: How much are we called to give? Answering that question is hard, but it helps if we consider this as our perspective: Is God more generous to us now In Christ than what was given to the OT believers? If He is, then perhaps we have been thinking in the wrong perspective. Rather than 10% being the ceiling of our giving, what if it was our starting point?

"Rather than 10% being the ceiling of our giving, what if it was our starting point?"

"He owns the cattle on a thousand hills.."

Psalm 50:10
It is important to remember that God does not need our money. We are not giving simply for the sake of maintaining a budget or staff salaries. We give because what we do with our money shows us what we are worshipping. We give because He freely gave to us. Out of an overflow of Grace, Jesus sacrificed His prestige and privileges for the sake of the lost. When this Gospel truth sinks in deeply it changes our perspective on our stuff, and so we seek to be generous as He has been generous to us.
